The mortality for massive pulmonary embolism is 50%. PE is the third most common acute cardiovascular event after MI and stroke. Pulmonary embolism is frequently diagnosed, but treatment has been lacking. Things are changing, however, and the advent of newer devices along with Pulmonary Embolism Response Teams and the recognition that intervention makes a difference in the outcomes will drive this emerging field of PE intervention.
